Thinking Like a Historian
Change and Continuity Before- 1920s
The view of women has changed. Before the 1920s, women were supposed to be quiet and stay out of the way, but after the 1920s, women became strong, independent women. They were bold and spoke their minds. Women also were getting more rights, starting with the right to vote. Before the 1920s, the right to vote for women was only a dream, but after, women could vote and started to want even more rights to make them equal to men. Women after the 1920s were also more educated and in the workforce. All girl colleges were becoming more popular and more women were earning college degrees. Women after the 1920s were also getting jobs as secretaries, nurses, telephone operators, and more. Before the 1920s, the only job for women was to find a husband and raise children. Some women quit their jobs after the got married, but times were still changing. Although there were many changes, times for women stayed the same in some ways. Women were still not considered equal. Alice Paul wanted to change that with the Equal Rights Amendment, but that did not pass. Women still were in ways not in control of themselves. They still had men make choices for them and were not able to make choices for themselves. Still, there was many changes for women and women benefited from those changes. They were becoming more and more independent everyday and that helped the women's movement greatly. Men, on the other hand, did not benefit from the changes. Some men did not mind the new rights women had, but some were very unhappy about it and believed that women should not have equal rights. Those men did not benefit from he changes because they were used to being in control of the women, but now that women had voices in their own opinions, the men could not control them as much anymore.
Change and Continuity 1920s- Today
Again, the view of women has changed. Some women today are even more bold and independent. Many women earn college degrees and get the same jobs that men also get. Today, women have the same opportunities as men. Women can be doctors, lawyers, or anything they set their minds to. In the 1920s, that was unthinkable. Regardless of how many changes there have been, what has not changed involving women is that women are still expected to be the child-bearers. Women are still expected to raise the children, clean the house, and have a meal waiting for their spouse. Men may not view women like they were in the 1920s and before, but in many cases, women get stuck with more housework. Still, there have been many improvements and women have benefited from those changes. Women are not stuck with a few choices of what they want to do like they were in the 1920s. They have the same choices and opportunities as men. Men who do not believe women should have as many rights as men have not benefited from these changes. There are some men who think women should not be bold and speak their minds and who do not think women should have the same opportunities as men.
