Women
In the new age, the Roaring 20s, the view of women changed and it was because of the very popular new way of life: being a flapper. The flappers were young women with short haircuts, makeup, and a new scandalous dress length to the knees. Many young women at this time wanted to have fun and being a flapper did just that. The
view of women changed because women now participated in activities they would
not dare to before. Women drank, smoked, and did many things that men at the
time did also.
The Women's Movement also made some waves in the 1920s. On August 18th, 1920 the 19th Amendment was ratified which allowed women to vote. There were also some strong women that fought for more rights for women. Alice Paul fought for equal rights in the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). To her, voting rights was not enough so she created the ERA. This would make all sex discrimination illegal, but it was never passed in Congress. In 1921, Margaret Sanger also fought for more rights. She created the American Birth Control League (ABCL). She believed that women should be taught about birth control and that they should be in control of their own bodies.

Other gains of this period for women included the creation of the Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor. This fought for women if they worked in unsafe
conditions or if something was not right for women at
work. Women for the first time were also allowed to be in the Olympics in 1928. Some were angered by this and said it was not right, but women were getting closer to being equal to men. One final way the Women's Movement was successful in the 1920s is that more women were being educated. All girl colleges were established and the percent of women with college
degrees increased being 39%.
Life became different for many women in the 1920's. Because of the higher education women received, they were able to get jobs as secretaries, teachers, nurses, and more. Now, women were earning their own money, but many stopped working once they got
married.
